The L.A. Times
Jason Moran
Jazz pianist, composer, and artist, was born in Houston, Texas. He attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he was a student of Jaki Byard. After completing his studies, he furthered his education under Andrew Hill and Muhal Richard Abrams.
Moran’s association with Blue Note Records spanned 18 years and resulted in 9 highly praised albums. His innovative trio, The Bandwagon, consisting of bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Moran’s collaborations with Cassandra Wilson, Charles Lloyd, and the late Sam Rivers demonstrate the breadth of his musical partnerships. He has also collaborated with visual artists such as Adrian Piper, Joan Jonas, Glenn Ligon, Adam Pendleton, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Stan Douglas, and others.
He has received numerous awards and fellowships, including from the MacArthur Foundation, US Artists, Doris Duke Foundation, and Ford Foundation.
In 2012, Moran and his wife, mezzo-soprano/composer Alicia Hall Moran, were featured artists in the Whitney Biennial, where they presented BLEED, a five-day series of live performances covering Motown to acupuncture to dance. They also created WORK SONGS for the 2015 Venice Biennial and continue to release albums under their record label, YES RECORDS.
Since his debut album, Jason Moran has released fourteen additional albums, composed scores for Ava DuVernay’s films “Selma” and “13th,” and for Ta-Nehisi Coates’ staged adaptation of “Between the World and Me.” Moran frequently explores historical themes in his work, as evidenced by his monumental touring projects honoring Thelonious Monk (“IN MY MIND: Monk at Town Hall 1959”), Fats Waller (“Fats Waller Dance Party,” which also spawned a Grammy-nominated album titled “All Rise: An Elegy for Fats Waller”), and James Reese Europe (“James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin”).
In 2018, Moran’s first solo museum exhibition debuted at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and later traveled to the ICA/Boston before concluding at the Whitney Museum of American Art in September 2019. Currently, Moran serves as the Artistic Director for Jazz at The Kennedy Center, teaches at the New England Conservatory and Jazz Ahead, and curates the Artist’s Studio series at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.
