Director Selects: What to expect from Martha Graham Dance on Opening Night

By Thor Steingraber

The Martha Graham Dance Company is America’s oldest dance company, led for six decades by one of the most influential women of the 20th century – Martha Graham. Today, the company is led by Janet Eilber, who danced in the company during Graham’s life and who carries the torch today on behalf of the company’s rich and long history.

In the interview above, we talk about the 100th anniversary of the company and its performance at The Soraya for Opening Night on September 30th.

This is not just an evening for dance lovers, it’s a historic one — The Soraya is the first venue on the company’s three-year centenary tour. Eilber describes the program – its historical significance as well as what’s new and exciting about it, especially a new rendering of the pivotal wartime ballet by Agnes DeMille, Rodeo.

As always, The Soraya will bring together the Graham company and live music, in this case, two different ensembles – as always, Chris Rountree leading Wild Up, as well as a bluegrass ensemble led by the fiddler Gabe Witcher (known from his band Punch Brothers, among other things).

Soak up Janet’s vast knowledge and then get ready for an Opening Night of historic proportions.

Gratefully,
