Director Selects: Midori and the enduring value of Schumann’s final composition

By Thor Steingraber

I had the pleasure of spending a day with violinist Midori about ten years ago. We both sat on a panel for the Aspen Institute about “citizen artists,” or put otherwise, artists who are using their craft for the greater good of humanity. Midori embodies those values, and then as now, I am so impressed with her grace, vision, and determination to make a global impact.

She and I recently spoke about her upcoming concert at The Soraya, and in particular, the Schumann violin concerto that had almost disappeared for a few generations after the composer’s untimely death in a mental institution. While there is still some mystery about why his final composition wasn’t more broadly embraced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Midori is persuasive about its enduring value and beauty. Her performance at The Soraya with the chamber orchestra from Lucerne makes for one of the most auspicious debuts in the 2023-24 season.

Gratefully,
