Director Selects: Randy Newman reflects on "Faust" and its Soraya premiere

Director’s Selects 2024-25 kicks off today with the season’s Opening Night, in one of the most memorable interviews I’ve had the privilege of conducting. Renowned American songwriter Randy Newman joined me for a call to discuss the 30-year evolution of his only musical, Faust. 

Since 20 years ago, I have been a Faust fanatic. At that time, it was not easy to acquire a copy of the album featuring Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley and Elton John. My copy was a cherished possession, played over and over again, often in on my car stereo. Now the album is readily available online, and I hope that our concert presentation at The Soraya revives interest in Newman’s masterpiece. It has all of the elements we know from the classic Goethe novel as well as Newman’s signature American humor.

Leading the cast at The Soraya are two extraordinary Broadway veterans – Javier Muñoz as the Lord and Reeve Carney as the Devil. The remaining cast will be announced shortly. They will be joined onstage by a gospel choir and big band for what promises to be one of the most important theatrical and musical events of the year.
