Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard was responsible for two of the most important cultural moments in the years following the pandemic – the opening of each of his new operas in New York at the Metropolitan Opera. Blanchard was the first African American composer to premiere an opera in the Met’s century + history, and the response was wildly enthusiastic. In April 2025, in a collaboration with the LA Opera, we will bring to Los Angeles for the first time excerpts from both of those operas, Champion and Fire Shut Up In My Bones. Blanchard himself will perform in the eight-member instrumental ensemble, joined by two singers.
In this video interview, Blanchard talks openly about his introduction to opera and the two stories he chose to bring to the stage. Blanchard is one of the most prolific film composers of our era, collaborating many times with acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, an experience that informed his opera composition, as did his background as a jazz artist.
Blanchard’s return to The Soraya will be one of the highlights of the upcoming season, bringing a crossover performance that combines many art forms to be embraced by audiences of every sort.
