Eugenia León and La Marisoul are Soraya favorites, and I was honored to bring them back for this epic performance invoking one of the most legendary musical artists of the 20th century, Chavela Vargas. Personally, I am just learning about Chavela’s legacy. It’s one of the perks of my job — the opportunity to expand my knowledge and tastes. Beyond Chavela’s one-of-a-kind voice, gender-bending persona, and countless recordings, I am also fascinated by her role in 20th century culture, including her relationships with household names like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and later with filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
In this video interview, La Marisoul and Eugenia León dive deeper into the importance of Chavela and describe how the Chavela y Sus Mujeres concert has evolved from its original performances in Mexico.
Gratefully,
