Director Selects: Tap Master Savion Glover is part philosopher, part poet

By Thor Steingraber

Savion Glover is in a league of his own. He is part philosopher and part poet. With his new piece, SoUNDz’ SaCRoSaNcT, he might also be considered a memoirist, that is with a memoir in movement. In this excerpt from our recent interview (watch in the video above), he was reflective and vulnerable, talking about arriving at a place in his lifetime experience that warrants a “one-man show.”

He has created not only a psychological portrait of his own life on stage and off but also pays homage to his friend and mentor Gregory Hines, as well as the other great “hoofers” of the generation preceding. Glover was only seven years old when he met these artists who were that many decades older than him.

The Soraya is proud to be an early partner in the development of SoUNDz’ SaCRoSaNcT.  Audiences at the renowned SF Jazz Festival this past summer reacted to the piece in very emotional ways, some may even say it was an ecstatic experience. Come see for yourself on October 7.

Gratefully,

Thor Steingraber, Executive and Artistic Director
