Few things make me prouder than when every seat at The Soraya is filled, when enthusiastic fans of all generations come together to celebrate their favorite artists. The Soraya’s series Hecho en las Américas best exemplifies that spirit, featuring artists from Mexico and Latin America. With six years of performances as proof-of-concept, The Soraya is more committed than ever to these artists and to the vast audience they attract. That’s why we spent this week (with masks!) with a few of those artists, filming an episode for KCET’s Southland Sessions. We invited an All-Star line-up to perform a tribute concert to Linda Ronstadt, the artist who paved the way for the Latin and Mexican artists who followed.
Later this month, we will host Jazz great Arturo O’Farrill in an online conversation about his groundbreaking album and documentary film Fandango at The Wall. O’Farrill is a giant in the New York jazz scene and brings his Mexican and Cuban roots to all this work. In this latest undertaking, he spreads his wings further, bringing together artists from beyond his typical jazz universe, a labor of love, one that is motivated by important issues of human rights.
As we conclude National Hispanic Heritage Month, The Soraya is proud of our ongoing contribution to the advancement of a great musical tradition and to the innovators who continue to shape it.
Gratefully,
A Tribute To Linda Ronstadt
The Soraya celebrates the legacy of Linda Ronstadt, whose music knows no borders in a special concert filmed live on our stage for television and online audiences. Featuring music trailblazers Aida Cuevas, La Marisoul, David Hidalgo, Sara Watkins, Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar, La Santa Cecilia, and the CSUN Honors String Quartet. Music produced and directed by Cheche Alara, it’s a tribute you don’t want to miss.
Fandango at the Wall follows Arturo O’Farrill, Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra founder, and Kabir Sehgal, bestselling author and Grammy-winning music producer, as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Join O’Farrill, the filmmakers, and special guests in an event produced exclusively for The Soraya, as they share stories about the trans-national project and film, reminding us of music’s powerful ability to bridge cultural barriers.
