On June 6, The Kennedy Center hosted its 43rd annual prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, presented uniquely without a live audience, celebrating the artistic legacies of Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, Midori, and Dick Van Dyke. The broadcast included tribute performances from familiar faces and Soraya alums: Yo-Yo Ma, who led The Soraya’s 2015 gala, performed a musical dedication to violinist Midori; Desmond Richardson, presented recently in Films.Dance, performed alongside Vanessa Hudgens in a Fame tribute to dance icon Debbie Allen; Derek Hough delivered a high-energy performance of “Step in Time” in tribute to actor Dick Van Dyke, who has also been a special guest of The Soraya.
Although The Kennedy Center’s iconic plush velvet seats remain empty, there is optimism that audiences will soon return. I applaud the Kennedy Center and look forward to the day we can share moments like these with you in person, safe and sound. Below, you will find links to some of my favorite moments of the ceremony, but I recommend watching it in its entirety (Click Here).
