Director Selects: Jazz at Naz and Samara Joy return to The Soraya

By Thor Steingraber

Jazz has a long history in the Valley and in Northridge. The Soraya assumed that mantle when it opened in 2011, and then furthered its commitment post-pandemic with an ambitious winter festival, Jazz at Naz. The festival programming balances masters with young talent. The 2023 festival highlights were many, but few were as memorable as the debut of Samara Joy, fresh off her double Grammy wins. Apparently, she enjoyed her time at The Soraya as much as we enjoyed presenting her because she immediately signed up to come back again this December with a holiday performance.

Artists like Ms. Joy have countless offers from the far corners of the nation and globe, so it is a great testament to our audience and our staff that she will come back to us so soon. Then, a couple of months later, the third edition of Jazz at Naz will return with all breadth and flare you expect – two generations of Cuban Jazz, two generations of groove-makers on the Hammond B3 organ, New Orleans jazz, South Carolina jazz, and opening night with Herb Alpert and Lani Hall.

Packages and Memberships are available now, and single tickets are available for Members on August 8, 2023 and the public on August 11, 2023. But don’t wait – get a package and immerse yourself in the entire jazz artist experience, from December through February.

Gratefully,
