This week‘s Director Selects points you to PBS, the esteemed broadcaster that has championed the performing arts for decades. As a young person, I recall my family gathering around the television to watch its presentations. This was my earliest exposure to opera and ballet, among other things.
On March 21 (11:30 p.m.) and March 27 (8:30 p.m.), PBS will present the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Fire Shut Up In My bones by Terence Blanchard. The Soraya will subsequently present concert excerpts from that opera as well as Blanchard’s Champion (see excerpt below) on April 6. This West Coast premiere was commissioned by the Soraya and features Blanchard himself performing in the musical ensemble.
While we may not have the sets and costumes and full cast, The Soraya presents a unique opportunity to be a part of the greatest cultural phenomenon in the past decade – the first two operas by a black composer to premiere at the Met. Blanchard has long been a leading figure in the worlds of jazz and film. Now he adds another feather in his cap.
Gratefully,
